IMS SLITS 24&26

Please dont run these slits to a size larger than the beam. Such practice is not consistent with keeping activation level down to "as low as resobably achievable"(ALARA).

For example, on Aug 11, they were set to 8 mm, even though (as Colin told me) nothing was gained by going larger than 6.5 mm. If such is the case, then ALARA means set the slits to 6.5 mm.

In general, if experimenters want maximum rates, have them monitor the rates as the slits are closed. Leave the slits at a setting where their rates just begin to fall. For the surface source this shoud be in the range of 5-6 mm. If this is not the case it means the separator-to-IMS match is bad and shoud be re-tuned.
